Could some of your tax penalties be removed?

Penalty relief can reduce eligible penalties when the applicable requirements are met. It is a separate analysis from settling the underlying tax debt.

Two common routes to review

First Time Abate is an administrative waiver available for certain penalties when the taxpayer meets the compliance and prior-penalty-history requirements. The IRS checks the relevant tax periods and whether required filings and payment arrangements are in place.

Reasonable cause relief considers facts that explain a failure despite reasonable care. Serious illness, a natural disaster, or inability to obtain necessary records may be relevant depending on the penalty and circumstances. A lack of money, by itself, does not automatically establish reasonable cause.

What penalty relief does not do

Removing a penalty generally does not eliminate the original tax owed. Interest tied to an abated penalty may be adjusted, but interest on the underlying tax normally continues under separate rules. Different penalties have different relief standards.

A tax relief calculator cannot examine account transcripts, determine which specific penalties were assessed, or verify the history needed for First Time Abate. Our tool therefore presents penalty relief as a review option, never a confirmed reduction.

Build a useful request

Identify the penalty, amount, tax period, and notice. Prepare a short factual timeline and records supporting any reasonable-cause explanation. Review the IRS instructions for requesting relief by phone, written statement, or the applicable form. Keep copies of everything submitted.

Combine relief with a broader plan

Penalty relief may be relevant alongside an installment agreement or another resolution. If you disagree with the underlying tax assessment, that is a separate issue that may require an amended return, examination response, or appeal.
